Top Mara grads to get Ivy League scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR: Top graduates from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) stand to receive full scholarships for studies at the world's best universities from next year.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said 25 full scholarships would be given annually to its top students for postgraduate studies at Ivy League universities in the United States and others like them in countries like Australia and Britain.
Among the universities targeted are Harvard, Princeton, Yale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford, Cambridge and the Imperial College of London.
"Nominated candidates will be interviewed by a selection committee in the respective faculties at UiTM. Their admission will also depend on fulfilling the stringent prerequisites.
"To ensure that they are ready to face the challenges ahead, we will equip them with the proper training. These scholars will raise the bar at UiTM.
"Successful candidates, upon their return home, will be bonded for service as lecturers."
Sahol Hamid said the number of scholarship recipients would also be reviewed over time. "I promise that if more than enough eligible candidates are recommended, we will send them. Our goal is to educate the masses by opening up the doors to the poor and underprivileged."
The project is part of UiTM's efforts to place Malays as consultant experts on the world map. The first batch will be sent next September.
